Who Doesn't Love a New Stamp

by The Wonky Tree

Fab Stamps for your Greeting Cards.

Just like anyone, we in The Wonky Tree office get very excited when we get post and it's not a bill! Today was no exception as we had these gorgeous 1st class stamps arrive via The Royal Mail.

These "Special Stamps" are from moments in British history to latest blockbusters. This month's edition to collect is based on the fabulous Queen rock band. We haven't got those yet but will be placing an order. Today we received our James Bond, Star Wars and Penny Black editions. We cannot wait to use these for your Wonky Tree Orders.

In fact today Nick (The Wonky Tree website manager) dug out his collection of stamps in a book he has had since he was around 10 years old.... he's now 58! He still got quite excited and nostalgic when looking through it.

Early History of Stamps

The story begins in the 12th century with Henry 1st who appointed messengers to carry letters for the government. Between 1100 and 1135, 4,500 letters were carried by the messengers. The reign of Edward II saw the first postal markings; handwritten notations saying "Haste, post haste".

From the end of 1839, letters could arrive at any address in the United Kingdom. On 10 January 1840 the Uniform Penny Post started, charging only 1d for prepaid letters. Fixed rates meant that it was practical to avoid handling money to send a letter by using an "adhesive label", on 6 May, the Penny Black became the world's first postage stamp in use.
